CICA Welcomes Call for a National Framework for Career Development

The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) welcomes the Regional Education Commissioner’s 2024 Annual Report and its strong recognition of the pivotal role career development plays in building aspiration, confidence, and opportunity, particularly in regional, rural, and remote Australia.

The report, authored by the Hon Fiona Nash, recommends a national framework for career advice across all life stages and a comprehensive review of current career advice delivery.

CICA Executive Director David Carney said the recommendations align with CICA’s long-standing advocacy for a coordinated, evidence-based national approach.

“Career development is essential to lifting participation, improving tertiary attainment, and supporting Australia’s future workforce,” Mr Carney said.
“A nationally consistent framework will ensure that every Australian, wherever they live, can access high-quality, professional career support.”

CICA also welcomes the report’s emphasis on valuing both VET and university pathways, and its proposal for a Regional Education Collaborate and Connect program to strengthen partnerships between education, industry, and communities.

“Career development connects learning and work,” Mr Carney said. “Embedding quality career guidance within education and workforce systems is vital to building aspiration and national productivity.”

CICA looks forward to working with governments, industry, and education partners to progress these recommendations, guided by the CICA Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners and the Australian Blueprint for Career Development.
