The Jobs and Skills Summit must consider the importance of career development support.
On the eve of the Australian Governments Jobs and Skills Summit, the Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) is keen to see continued and easy access in the provision of career development support to Australians of all ages and stages of their career in addressing the challenges around jobs, skills and the economy.
Megan Fritsch, President of the Career Industry Council of Australia, said career development support is critical for success in learning for both young people and adults who wish to upskill or retrain. It enables effective career transitions for individuals in their early, mid and late careers.
‘Digital transformation, globalisation, demographic change, climate change and global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic make decisions about learning and work more complex’, Ms Fritsch said.
Individuals are challenged to deal with more frequent and difficult transitions within and between education and work, increasing the need for coordinated career development support systems at all levels of government and industry across the country.
Widespread access to career development support means that people of all ages, regardless of their gender, culture, socioeconomic status, or where they live, can get the services, and measures they need.
This means that career guidance services and provision of information do not discriminate against anyone and that anyone can get help from one or more of the services.
Accessible services consider each person’s needs, preferences, and situation. They also offer a service that can be tailored to each person and uses the right methods, tools, and language to meet those needs and preferences.
Good access also means that services and activities are offered in the best setting for them and that people can get extra help when they need it.
Access can be improved by giving people more rights to career development, making digital and distance services easy to use, reaching out to the most vulnerable people, and building career guidance into other activities and services.
