A New Standard for Career Development Services: Introducing the 3rd Edition of the Guiding Principles
Good career development doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of practitioners who are informed, ethical, and committed to quality, and it’s supported by clear standards that help services and products meet the needs of the people they serve.
That’s exactly what the Guiding Principles for Career Development Services and Career Information Products are designed to do. CICA is pleased to announce the release of the 3rd edition, an update that reflects the realities of contemporary practice and the evolving needs of clients, employers, and the broader community.
What Are the Guiding Principles?
The Guiding Principles provide a framework for what constitutes quality in career development services and career information products. They are designed to be used across a wide range of settings – schools, universities, employment services, private practice, and beyond and apply to both the services practitioners deliver and the information products that support career decision-making.
While the CICA Professional Standards describe what practitioners should know and be able to do, the guidance principles focus on the service itself: what clients can reasonably expect and what organisations and practitioners should aim for.
What’s New in the 3rd Edition?
The career development landscape has changed considerably since the previous edition, and the 3rd edition has been updated to reflect that.
Digital and AI-assisted services have grown significantly, and the updated Principles provide guidance on how these tools should be used in ways that are ethical, transparent, and genuinely useful to clients. The 3rd edition also strengthens the emphasis on client feedback and continuous improvement, reinforcing that quality services don’t just meet standards, they learn from the people they serve.
Equity and access are receiving renewed attention, reflecting the critical role that career development services play in supporting people who face barriers to participation in education and work. And in a fast-moving labour market, the Principles set a clear expectation that career information products are regularly reviewed and kept current.
Why This Matters
The release of the third edition is part of CICA’s broader professionalisation agenda, a coordinated effort to strengthen the foundations of the career development profession in Australia. Alongside the 5th edition of the Professional Standards, the refresh of the Australian Blueprint for Career Development, and the National Register of Professional Career Development Practitioners (RPCDP), the updated Guiding Principles contribute to a profession that is well-defined, well-supported, and well-regarded.
CICA President Megan Fritsch welcomed the release: “The Guiding Principles have always been about raising the bar for what good career development looks like in practice. This updated edition reflects how much our field has evolved, and gives practitioners and organisations a clear, contemporary framework to work from. It’s a resource the whole profession can be proud of.”
For practitioners, the Guiding Principles are a practical touchstone, a resource to return to when designing services, reviewing quality, or making decisions about the tools and products used in practice. For organisations, they offer a framework for accountability and improvement. For clients, they represent a commitment that the services they access will be delivered with care, competence, and integrity.
Getting Involved
CICA encourages members and the broader profession to engage with the 3rd edition, to read it, share it, and put it to work.
The Guiding Principles are most valuable when they are embedded in everyday practice, not sitting on a shelf.
